How do we really “hear well”?
That’s the question that’s had the Loaves and Fishes Leadership Council scratching their heads since we formed early this fall. Our job is to hear what the congregation, the surrounding community, and the wider global community is saying regarding how to put the $1.44 million Atrium Village money to work. Then, after hearing, our job is to discern where God is calling us to invest.
There are a million $1,000,000 ideas out there. As I think about how to “hear well,” how to choose among the many great ideas, I keep coming back to Philippians 1:9-10:
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ …
Some versions of this verse say “discern what is excellent” – I like that idea: that among many good things, there are a few excellent ones for our congregation at this time. Our challenge is to find the signposts that God is using to point toward excellence.
How We Will Seek to “Hear Well”
Our first step in the process of “hearing well” is to listen to the terrific feedback we’ve received already (and continue to receive) from our prayer schools. We are grateful for that. We know we need to go deeper into these insights, as well as develop new channels for additional insights. Therefore, earlier this month we introduced the Big Ideas Interview Process. Throughout December and January we will conduct over 100 interviews with LaSallers, ministry leaders, missionaries, community advocates, and others. The interviews (which are being conducted by our council, staff, elders, and prayer captains) will help us hear the issues and ideas closest to the heart of our congregation.
The interview process will conclude on January 30th with a “mini summit” – an evening gathering of the interviewers (and anyone else who would like to join the fun) to share results, organize around ideas, and design quick “prototypes” of a dozen or so concepts that have emerged from the interview process.
These prototypes will be taken back to the L&F Leadership Council for prayerful consideration throughout February, March and April. We hope to have clear ideas of where God is calling us to work by May so we can build consensus, discuss with the elder board, and bring it to the congregation in June.
Here’s how you can help:
- If you’d like to be interviewed and haven’t been asked, email me at email@example.com, and we’ll make arrangements.
- Consider joining us on Friday, January 30th for our Mini Summit. RSVP here by Wednesday, January 28th.
- Pray. I have the ongoing sense that our work is floating on the prayers of LaSalle’s people. Please pray for our ability to “discern what is excellent.”
